VACANCY: MICROBIOLOGIST -KASANE

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for the post of microbiologist to join our team in Kasane, Botswana. This position is ideal for someone passionate about fieldwork and laboratory research, contributing to impactful studies on the interconnected health of humans, animals, and the environment under the "One Health" framework.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

MSc in biology or related field with a focus specific focus on microbiology

At least two years of demonstrated experience in microbiological research.

Strong organizational skills with attention to detail.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office.

A valid driver’s license.

Must be a Botswana citizen.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS THAT WOULD BE ADVANTAGEOUS

Experience driving a vehicle with a trailer.

Proficiency in operating small boats.
-
Familiarity with bush navigation and field safety.

Knowledge and use of R program.

Experience in supervising and training staff.

Experience with the use of LIMS to manage workflows.

Demonstrated record of peer reviewed publications.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Laboratory Duties
-
Perform microbiological isolation of target bacteria from biological and environmental samples.
-
Conduct DNA extraction on various sample types.
-
Use molecular techniques (PCR), for bacterial identification and isolate confirmation.
-
Enter and manage research data efficiently.
Fieldwork Responsibilities
-
Conduct field work including collection of biological samples and other data as needed.

Provide general support to ongoing research programs and centre functions as required.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the collection and processing of diverse biological and environmental samples to study pathogen presence and antibiotic resistance. You will work closely with a dedicated team of researchers and field specialists, contributing intellectually to a variety of projects. This role requires adaptability, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to advancing One Health research in a dynamic field setting.
